Monsoon — A Sacred Prayer

By Vinish C Nair

That evening, the sky burst out low,
A drop fell – then another –
As if heaven had found me out of shelter again.
But the earth finally sighed in relief,
Breathing heavy with memories.
Its scars hidden wet under the new rain of the season.
The smell of rain, and it was like a prayer,
Old and sacred,
One kind that no temple remembers, every soul remembers.

For me, who worshipped the summer glare
For it’s certainty, for the blazing spirit it offered
As the rain drops fell on my palms
I started to feel a new refuge!
As I now let the rain erase my dust,
Each drop was a forgiveness,
Each puddle a new reflection of who I used to be.
The thunder rolled very loudly like heartbeat,
Lightning tore through the clouds –
Not in anger, but in liberation.
The trees swayed with laughter,
The birds returned home bringing music under their nests.
Children played along the silver streams,
Their laughter mixing with the rhythm of the falling sky.

I saw the rivers find their voices again,
No longer just whispering but roaring truly.
Every path became a mirror,
Every mirror a memory.
There was a time when I was afraid to cry –
Summer had taught me pride.

When the rain touched my face,
I realized that tears are not weakness,
But it was a return; Like
Rain returning to the ocean from which they were born.

Somewhere a melody started to rise,
Too weak to sing along, too eternal to forget!
Drowning in its echo, I knew –
Even the fiercest fire must one day look for clouds to pour!
